Your Target Market Is Essential
Believe This - Every One Is NOT Interested In Your Business. Find The Ones Who Are And Focus On Them.
How do you find your target market?
You may have driven on the freeway during a high traffic time and looked around seeing thousands of cars and said to yourself that every one of those cars is a potential customer for your business. You only have to figure a way to reach them with your message. You may be overwhelmed by the - How do I reach them problem. You need to ask these two crucial questions. Who are your customers? Who will buy your products? The reality is that only a limited number of people will buy your product or service. The task becomes identifying as closely as possible who those buyers are. You might consider becoming a specialist instead of being - all things to all people. These are a few questions that you might ask. What needs are my potential customers seeking to satisfy? What problems are they seeking to solve? What are they looking for that will make them feel good? If you are feeling stuck or mired down, a good coach will help identify the answers to these questions. The next step is to create a marketing plan to target your market. Answer these questions. Is your market national or international? If you plan to use the internet, international may be an option. What is the age, sex, educational status, income, marital status or family status of your target market? The more you can define your target the more likely you will be to reach your goals. The local Chamber of Commerce is a good resource for demographic information. Remember to identify your competition. If you are a small business competing with a large corporation, what can you offer customers that the larger corporation cannot offer? For example, individual service that knows the customer by name and shows that they care about the needs of the customer. Let’s take a look at one example - the telephone industry. What would the target market be for cell phones? What would be the ages of your market? What would be the best way to reach them locally, nationally or internationally? Where do they hang out on the internet? Does your target market want to change phones regularly to keep up with the current trends? What can you offer them that the large corporations can not offer? After you have done your research, you also want to know how much will the average customer spend on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis. If the amount is low, you will have to focus on high volume. If the customer is spending 100s of dollars per month, then your volume is not as critical. Next you need to focus on how to get the word out that you are in business and offering products or services that your target market wants. If you desire to position yourself as a specialist, you may want to consider starting a blog, web site or Facebook Fan Page. With these resources you can offer specialized content to your audience. Some of these resources are free to use and some are low cost. The internet offers great tools to market your business but many times it is not the “How to” market but the “What to” place in your marketing that will attract customers. Knowing who your customers are and what they want is the beginning to answering that problem. You may live in a large metropolitan area filled with millions of people or marketing to billions on the internet but remember not every body will want to be your customer or buy your products. So identify the ones who will and focus on them. Here’s to your success, Mark Sinclair 909-260-3724
